Apartheid was abolished between 1990 and 1991, and the South Africa National Rugby Union Team, commonly know as the Springboks, were readmitted to international rugby in 1992. South Africa hosted the 1995 Rugby World Cup and there was a surge of support among both white and black South Africans who united behind the slogan "one team, one country.” Ultimately, South Africa won the 1995 Rugby World Cup Final against New Zealand, and President Nelson Mandela presented the trophy to team captain Francois Pienaar, a white Afrikaner. The gesture was widely seen as a signficant symbolic step towards the reconciliation of white and black South Africans. This story became the basis for “Invictus," a 2009 biographical sports film directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon.
